Spend your day enjoying the Girdwood and Portage Valleys. You will travel along the breathtaking Turnagain Arm, famous for its unusual bore tide. This drive has been voted one of the Top Ten Most Scenic Drives in America by Conde Nast Magazine. Watch for eagles, Dall sheep, moose and perhaps spot beluga whales feeding on the hooligan in Turnagain Arm. You'll visit Portage where the 1964 earthquake caused land to drop between 6 and 12 feet along the Turnagain Arm. High tides flooded the area, forcing the estimated 50 to 100 residents of Portage to move. Rustic old buildings and Ghost Forests are visible signs of remains by the invading saltwater. You will explore the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center whose mission is to provide refuge for orphaned, injured and ill animals and taking care of animals that cannot survive in the wild.
This is Alaska's only drive-through wildlife viewing exhibit where you will have the opportunity to capture a glimpse of a grizzly bear, reindeer, buffalo, elk, caribou, musk ox, moose, eagles, or a Sitka blacktail deer. A special tour will be provided by Mike Miller who will explain the mission of the center, a little bit about each species (how and why they are at the center), ongoing research projects and the Alaska Wood Bison Reintroductory Program. Afterwards a behind the scenes walking tour will be given of the brown bear facility and the newly constructed wood bison corrals and handling facility and ending the tour will be a short walk through the wood bison fields out to the ocean. This spring the center expects to have 10 wood bison calves. These calves will represent the first wood bison calves to be born in Alaska since they became extinct in the state in 1928. These calves will be the first animals involved in the release. Onward to the Begich Boggs Visitor Center where you are invited to come experience Portage Valley, as living glaciers continue to carve the landscape and shape the life of the Chugach National Forest. Built on the remnants of a terminal moraine left by Portage Glacier, the Visitor Center is staffed with Forest Service interpreters available to answer questions and provide programs on the historical and natural wonders of the valley. The award-winning film, “Voices of the Ice” will be shown and provides a spectacular view of many glaciers and wildlife. The visitor center currently houses exhibits demonstrating “glaciers on the move” with insight into the retreat of Portage glacier. Although Portage Glacier is no longer visible from the Visitor Center, due to its retreat, the face of the glacier is still partially in Portage Lake. Afterwards enjoy lunch on your own at Portage Glacier Lodge.
