Kamchatka:

Kamchatka and the Russian Far East

The WILD Foundation recently partnered with the UNDP/GEF Project “Demonstration of sustainable conservation of biodiversity in four Russian Kamchatka Protected Areas” (UNDP/GEF Project), to hold a Roundtable on Tourism, Public Awareness and Protected Area Management. The Roundtable was held on May 12-14, 2005 in the Great Hall of the Kamchatka Research Library in Petrovplavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This Roundtable was held for Kamchatka protected areas staff, as well as for Russian and International NGOs working in Kamchatka. This Roundtable is an associated event of the 8th World Wilderness Congress (8th WWC), which is organized by The WILD Foundation, and will convene in Anchorage, Alaska from September 30 – October 6, 2005.

The Roundtable was designed to provide the UNDP/GEF Project with technical support and guidance on protected area management, ecotourism and environmental awareness as the UNDP/GEF Project enters into the second, four-year phase of its project. In addition, the Roundtable was designed to provide a platform for expert discussion on issues of pressing concern for conservation in Kamchatka beyond the UNDP/GEF Project.

Finally, a third key objective of the Roundtable was to help establish linkages between Kamchatkan and Alaskan conservationists. UNDP and WILD are working together to bring a delegation of about 15 Kamchatkans to the 8th WWC for follow up sessions to the Roundtable, to participate in training and capacity building workshops, and to further solidify ties between Kamchatka and Alaska. In particular, WILD is organizing a meeting for the Kamchatka delegation with Alaska State and Federal conservation agencies, and U.S. NGO counterparts. Following the 8th WWC, WILD, UNDP and NGOs working in Kamchatka will organize an awareness-raising event in Kamchatka, most likely during Kamchatka’s annual biodiversity conference in November, to report on the Kamchatka delegation’s participation in the 8th WWC and on general 8th WWC results.
