Wildlands in Europe: New Opportunities and How Best to Achieve Them

Europe offers a surprising array of wild landscapes, from the boreal forests of Northern Scandinavia, through the Carpathian and Alpine mountain ranges, to the swamps of the Danube delta and the moorlands of Scotland.

This is a time of exciting opportunity, with potential to create large new wildland areas as EU subsidy reform undermines hill farming. Yet there are also grave threats: development of the remoter corners of Eastern Europe, the impact of wind farms and remorseless encroachment by second homes.

3rd October

The wildland situation in Europe: key trends in restoration and protection. Trans-frontier networks. Opportunities and threats for wildland.

4th October

Key objectives for the future - protection and expansion. What is needed to meet these objectives? Is there scope for a Europe-wide Wildland Group?
